Hand and Finger Pain

Trigger Finger

Trigger finger is an inflammatory condition that can cause pain, stiffness, and the sensation of locking or catching when opening and straightening your fingers. This condition most commonly affects the thumb and ring finger but can affect any of the fingers.

Common Symptoms:

  • Pain when stretching the finger straight
  • Tenderness along the palm
  • Palpable and tender nodule (lump) at the base of the finger in the palm
  • Sensations of locking and catching when trying to straighten your finger

Common Treatments:

  • Rest
  • Splinting at night
  • Exercises
  • Anti-inflammatories (Ibuprofen / Aleve) and/or Tylenol
  • Steroid injections
  • Surgical correction

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common condition that is caused by compression of the median nerve as it crosses through the carpal tunnel in the wrist. Symptoms can range from mild numbness and tingling to significant hand weakness.

Common Symptoms:

  • Numbness, tingling and weakness most commonly in the thumb, index, and middle fingers
  • Night pain and numbness up to the elbow
  • Grip weakness
  • Loss of fine motor skills such as buttoning a shirt or threading a needle

Red Flags:

  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome can progress over time resulting in potentially irreversible damage to the median nerve. Please seek medical attention if you note frequent dropping of objects, or loss of fine motor skills

Common Treatments:

  • Anti-inflammatories (Ibuprofen / Aleve) and/or Tylenol
  • Rest
  • Bracing
  • Steroid injections
  • Surgical intervention

Cubital Tunnel Syndrome

Cubital Tunnel syndrome occurs when the ulnar nerve becomes compressed at the elbow. This can occur at various points within your arm, but most commonly occurs along the inside of your elbow. This can result in numbness and tingling in your hand involving your ring and little finger.

Common Symptoms:

  • Numbness and tingling in the ring and little finger
  • Grip weakness

Common Treatments:

  • Nerve conduction studies to evaluate your nerve and severity of the compression
  • Rest
  • Anti-inflammatories (ibuprofen / Aleve) and/or Tylenol
  • Bracing
  • Steroid injections
  • Surgical intervention
