Shoulder Pain

Shoulder Arthritis

Shoulder arthritis is also known as osteoarthritis or degenerative joint disease. It is when the protective covering of the bones that make up the shoulder joint (humerus and glenoid) begin to wear out.  This causes bone to rub against bone which causes pain and inflammation.

Common Symptoms:

  • Shoulder pain deep in the joint
  • Joint stiffness with loss of movement
  • Pain radiating down your arm to your elbow
  • Trouble raising your arm above chest level to comb hair
  • Grinding or clicking in your joint

Common Treatments:

  • Anti-Inflammatories (Ibuprofen, Aleve) and/or Tylenol
  • Physical Therapy / Home exercises
  • Ice and/or heat
  • Steroid injections
  • Surgical interventions

Rotator Cuff Tears

The rotator cuff is located in the shoulder and is made up of 4 muscles that form tendons that surround the shoulder joint.  The rotator cuff attaches the humerus to the shoulder blade and helps to lift and rotate your arm.  When your rotator cuff has a tear it effects your ability to move and lift your arm.

Common Symptoms:

  • Shoulder pain and weakness
  • Loss of movement
  • Pain radiating down your arm to your elbow
  • Trouble raising your arm above chest level
  • Pain at rest and at night

Common Treatments:

  • Anti-Inflammatories (Ibuprofen, Aleve) and/or Tylenol
  • Physical Therapy / Home exercises
  • Ice and/or heat
  • Steroid injections
  • Surgical interventions

Shoulder Bursitis/ Rotator Cuff Tendonitis / Impingement

Shoulder Bursitis, rotator cuff tendonitis, and Impingement syndrome are all conditions involving inflammation of the soft tissues (tendons, bursa) surrounding the shoulder. Tendonitis is when the rotator cuff tendons become inflamed, irritated, or damaged. Bursitis is caused when the bursa, a fluid filled sac, becomes inflamed and swollen. Impingement occurs when the soft tissues are inflamed and swollen and rub against and impinge on the bones of the shoulder causing pain.

Common Symptoms:

  • Shoulder pain and weakness
  • Loss of movement
  • Pain radiating to the side of your arm
  • Pain with lifting or reaching
  • Pain with increased activities

Common Treatments:

  • Anti-Inflammatories (Ibuprofen, Aleve) and/or Tylenol
  • Physical Therapy / Home exercises
  • Ice and/or heat
  • Steroid injections
  • Surgical interventions
